Eyeball your favourite interiors shots carefully and you’ll likely discover something interesting; the thing that gives rooms that something special isn’t the $100 throw cushions or bespoke furniture, it’s clever use of paint. Here, we’ve done the legwork and uncovered five simple ways to take a room from display house to designer using only paint.
1. Highlight something
It doesn’t matter if you’re highlighting an architectural feature or an oft-forgotten skirting board or window… a highlight colour can be dramatic, edgy or even provide just a little pop.
2. Colour block your walls
A modern look with a nod to the wallpaper stylings of years gone by, colour blocking can be minimal or detailed but above all provides dimension and depth to a room.
3. Choose an unexpected colour
White? Off-white? Bone? Ivory? Cream? Neutrals are wonderfully inoffensive but for instant style cred and wow factor, go for a colour that makes the walls have a statement all of their own.
4. Create a feature panel
The feature wall trend has spawned an offspring – the feature panel. Select just one section of a wall (or a nook to create the illusion of a room) and give it a shade all of its own.
5. Get artistic
Why just hang art when you can make it part of your home? The simpler concepts can be DIY-ed or achieved by a professional painter whereas the more complex concepts require an artist. Not ready to commit? You can always investigate adhesive options than can be removed with no damage to the wall. (We love Aviatrix).
