Online retail has undoubtedly changed the face of shopping for things like clothing and footwear, electronics and other bits and pieces. Homewares however, its yet to really be cracked. Perhaps it’s because most people think homewares and interiors are really just bulky furniture items. At any rate, you no longer have to be limited to your local Target, Ikea or other mass market furniture store when it comes to all those other little things that really make a home – picture frames, cushions, throws, serving platters, art… it’s all available online if you know where to look.

Here’s our edit of 12 great interiors stores that ship worldwide.

  1. AHAlife – technically a curated marketplace more than an ‘online store’ per se, AHAlife offers a range of design-savvy items from quirky doormats and fruit bowls to carved resin buffalo skulls and -um- brass banana statues. New customers receive a discount on their first order.
  2. Amara – the mecca for luxury homewares from brands like Missoni Home, Sonia Rykiel Maison, Marimekko and Cire Trudon. Specialising only in items for the home, Amara has something for every room of the house – even the outdoor ones. Don’t forget to check their online outlet, too!
  3. Fab – Fab doesn’t yet ship to every country around the world, but they’ve got the important ones (in our books, anyway) sorted. These guys cover a huge range of price points and items – we’re talking $12.00 dish towels through to $1,000.00+ furniture pieces. Make sure you take a look at their clearance section for some great finds.
  4. Anthropologie – Anthropologie is well known for its pretty and feminine womenswear, so their homewares selection is aptly edited. Cruise the site for whimsical crockery, artistic lighting and quirky accessories.
  5. Urban Outfitters – aimed at a younger crowd, Urban Outfitters ‘home’ selection is called ‘apartment’. Don’t let the name fool you though, if it’s competitively priced nicknacks like magnetic cat paperclip holders and collectable shower curtains you’re after, this should be your first port of call.
  6. OCCA-Home – these folks call themselves simply ‘the online interior design store’. It’s deceptively brief, for here you’ll discover all manner of delights for your home, such as copper pendant lights, digitally printed cushions, artful wallpaper and even beautiful salt and pepper shakers. If you need inspiration, make sure you take a look at their look books for magazine-quality shoots full of gorgeous interiors that can be shopped.
  7. Vavoom – candy-coloured cage light pendants, industrial farm-themed planters and cowhide rugs – if this sounds like your style, you’ll want to investigate Vavoom. These guys also run a VIP program offering discounts to regular customers.
  8. 1st Dibs – rather than your typical online store, 1st Dibs is more a marketplace where a world of antique stores, consignment stores and other such purveyors of fine things list their wares. Sign up to their newsletter or check back often lest you miss out on that one-off piece of perfection.
  9. Top 3 By Design – the clue here is in the name. Top 3 By Design carry items such as hurricane lamps, dustpan and brush sets that look like modern art, witty fish bowls and science-equipment inspired oil burners. Be warned, you’re likely to end up with way more than you intended on your doorstep in a few days time.
  10. Country Road – a long-time part of the Australian retail scene, Country Road’s homewares collection is minimalist and modern at kid-friendly prices.
  11. One Hundredth Gallery – sick of the same mass-produced prints? Discover the next big thing with One Hundredth Gallery’s collection from aspiring and emerging artists. Paintings, photography, sculpture – they can all be found here. If it’s almost-but-not-quite-right, be sure to ask – they often have a little something else hidden away that they haven’t made available to the masses.
  12. Bluefly – offering a little bit of everything from pets to pendant lamps, Bluefly sells previous season’s stock at reduced prices. If you love it, buy it because once it’s gone, it’s gone.
