Some people were just born with a purpose in life and with a name like Lola Berry, can you imagine a future in anything but food? Indeed, Lola is an incredibly talented nutritionist and the new brand ambassador of Almond Breeze almond milk.
I spent a few minutes quizzing Lola before getting the lowdown on a nutritious and speedy weekday breakfast option!
We love your message of healthy food being the tasiest. Have you always thought like this or was it a discovery you made along the way?
I’ve always been a bit of a foodie (to the extent that mum said when I was a kid that I’d always be the last one eating all the food at any kids party), but it wasn’t until I started to really listen to my body that I tuned to the foods which were really nourishing me. This is when I really started to love foods especially whole foods. I realised that staying away from the baddies like wheat, dairy and refined sugar or anything with numbers and added jazz make a huge difference to how you feel. So for me it’s all about food that nourishes you and sharing that food with the people you love.
You recently became the ambassador for Almond Breeze. Why are non-dairy alternatives important even for people who can drink milk?
Dairy is quite hard for the body to digest and break down, so switching to an alternative like almond milk will not only benefit your body’s digestive system, but will also help your energy levels. Often people feel much better when they take dairy out of their diet.
Non-dairy alternatives such as almond milk also have many benefits that will increase the quality of your diet: Almond Breeze for example is completely free from dairy, gluten and cholesterol. Made from almonds which are calcium rich and one of nature’s superfoods, it also has a low level of saturated fat which makes it a healthier alternative to skim milk and soy. I’ve swapped my regular milk to Unsweetened Almond Breeze, as it’s also completely free from added sugar making it low in GI.
Compared to cow’s milk, almond milk is the much healthier choice. Almond milk contains a wide variety of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function. Almond milk is also great for those who can’t drink cow’s milk due to lactose intolerance, or a casein or gluten allergy. Whole cow’s milk contains a lot more calories and fat than almond milk, making almond milk the better choice for those on a diet. Cow’s milk also contains saturated fat and cholesterol; almond milk is free of both saturated fat and cholesterol, making it a healthier choice, especially for those with heart problems.
Ed’s note: I was a bit ‘whatever’ about this, but in the interests of diligence, I swapped my regular cow’s milk which I have each morning at breakfast to almond milk for a week and I’ve definitely noticed a difference. Not huge, but I feel fuller, my stomach feels flatter and I can last until lunch without needing a snack. Go figure!
When people find out what you do you must get lots of questions. What’s the most common question / concern you hear?
The most common question hands down is “what do you eat?” People have this fascination with wanting to eat the same things, it’s great though because I love all the foods I eat and know all the best spots to find the best health products. I love sharing that info – it’s the best!
If people made just one change toward a healthier lifestyle what would you suggest it be?
Do what makes you happy and be around people who make you happy. Because at the end of the day I can tell you what to eat, how much to exercise and how many hours sleep you should be aiming for, but if you’re not happy you won’t get the results you’re after. It will be too easy to quit. The key to being healthy is loving who you are fully, and then the magic happens!
Who or what is inspiring you right now?
I’m inspired by anyone who’s doing what they love, anyone who has the courage to live their dream. Passionate people like Jamie Oliver, Steve Irwin, but also anyone I meet or work with can inspire me. I’ve got a mate called Jad and he’s the most amazing naturopath I know, another friend Linda, and she’s taught me that if you really have a dream that you love, then you (and only you) can make anything happen. These are the kind of people I love being around, they inspire me every single day.
