However you cut it, if you’re a sports fan there’s no shortage of major events all year ’round to get your fill. And who can resist jumping on the patriotic bandwagon when your home town, team or country is in with a chance at the major prize? Each and every one however, has it’s own unique set of fashion challenges.
Think we’re overstating the situation? We listed six big events happening this season and challenged Westfield’s National Stylist, Madelin Tomelty to give us a definitive answer on how to deal with spectator style situation.
Event: NBA Finals
Challenge: If you’re lucky enough to attend, you’re going to have to compete with a lot of A-listers.
Madelin’s Answer: You want to look front-row worthy without looking high-maintenance, so opt for skinny jeans, a leather jacket and heels to fit the ‘effortless glamour’ brief.
Event: US Open & British Open
Challenge: Looking chic on your couch in the wee hours.
Madelin’s Answer: Make the most of the hero pant in this situation with a loose, cotton printed style that will see you through the night. Team it with a luxe white tee and a cute and comfy AW13 loafer.
Challenge: Endurance. Some of the finals matches can go for many hours – what’s going to see you through the day and into the night?
Madelin’s Answer: To take your outfit into the night you can’t go wrong in a pair of black ponte leggings, this season’s winter floral dress and an oversized coat. Team back with mid-heeled boots for the perfect transitional outfit.
Event: Tour De France
Challenge: If you’re a dedicated spectator, watching the Tour is a month-long event on the road. Everything needs to be re-workable and packable!
Madelin’s Answer: Opt for denim and crease-free fabrics where possible to keep you stylish yet practical. Printed fabrics work a treat when an iron isn’t handy and a pair of flat, ankle boots will keep you comfortable on those long days.
The Pieces: Saint James ‘Galathee’ breton tee £53.00 at Atterly Road, David Lawrence wool coat $449.00 AUD (exclusive to Westfield Centres), flat leather ‘Selena’ boots by Witchery and white straight leg ‘Ross’ jeans $150.00 AUD by Reiss.
Event: The Ashes
Challenge: Incorporating your team’s colour palette into your wardrobe.
Madelin’s Answer: Use the colour-injection trick and pop bits of your team’s colours into your existing outfit. A red lip, a coloured scarf or top teamed back with your wardrobe staples will do the job.
The Pieces: Celine sunglasses £163.00 via MatchesFashion.com, Priti NYC kingfisher nailpolish £8.95 at Cult Beauty, Bienniel stripe leather bag, $295.00 USD at J.Crew, Elizabeth Cole blue mohawk earrings £81.25 at The Outnet, coral red Bernetta scarf $75.00 AUD by Reiss, Revlon lipstick $25.95 AUD via Priceline and red statement necklace from Colette by Colette Hayman $12.95 AUD (exclusive to Westfield Centres).
Event: AFL Finals Series
Challenge: It can be very, very cold and if you’re fortunate enough to be invited to attend on a corporate package you have to contend with a ‘cocktail’ dress code.
Madelin’s Answer: Opt for a sleeved dress and one of this season’s feature coats that look glamorous in their own right. Hide a long cardi layered under your coat for extra warmth and throw on a silk scarf. Once inside, your layers come off to reveal a cocktail frock perfect for the season.
The Pieces: Veronika Maine printed dress $229.00 AUD (exclusive to Westfield Centres), Pedro Lourenco alpaca-blend coat £982.00 at MatchesFashion.com and Diane Von Furstenberg cashmere scarf $216.26 AUD via My Wardrobe.
