If you don’t normally associate the name “Mexico” with the concept “luxury”, get ready to be surprised. If you didn’t already know, Mexico City is a UNESCO world-heritage listed site and the home of many European and colonial landmarks that date back as far as the sixteenth century. Think streets lined with cobblestones, palaces and the world-famous National Museum of Anthropology atop the ruins of the pre-Hispanic Aztec capital.
The suitably-named DOWNTOWN Mexico (yes, that’s the name of the hotel) is located in the Centro Histórico borough of Mexico City boasts an extraordinary blend of the original building’s seventeenth century colonial architecture with modern-day raw industrial finishes. Originally a palace, the meticulous renovation of DOWNTOWN Mexico ensured none of the building’s charisma was lost. Grey volcanic walls, handmade cement tiles, a grand patio, and an impressive stone-forge staircase featuring original artwork, have all been left intact.
Admittedly, facilities here are modest (rooftop bar, pool, Wi-Fi, valet parking) and don’t really compete with some of the extreme luxury hotels you’ll see around the world. But then, you don’t go to Mexico City to stay in your hotel now, do you?
With just 17 rooms and suites and prices typically under $200.00 USD a night per room, it’s definitely worth booking in advance.
Eye candy below, but to visit in person, book online at DOWNTOWN Mexico.
